Bicycle and Helmet Safety Program

This program is designed to teach children bicycle safety and the importance of wearing a helmet. Children aged 14 and under are five times more likely to be injured in a bicycle-related crash than older riders. The majority (70 percent) of fatal bicycle crashes involve head injuries, yet only about 20 percent of bike riders wear a bicycle helmet when riding. Wearing a helmet can lower the chances of head and brain injuries by up to 88 percent.

Class Description:

  • A child-friendly PowerPoint presentation.
  • Activity pages to educate children on bicycle safety, rules of the road, and helmet use.

The goal of this program is to:

  • Deliver current, comprehensive, and effective bicycle safety information.
  • Promote the correct and consistent use of helmets.

We can customize the length of our presentation based on the age of the audience.

Stop the Bleed Program

The Stop the Bleed course teaches individuals how to provide vital initial actions to stop uncontrolled bleeding in emergency situations. The Bleeding Control Basics course gives participants the necessary tools to become an empowered initial responder.

Class Description:

The course last no longer than 90 minutes. A formal presentation is followed by hands-on practice of applying direct pressure, packing a wound, and using a tourniquet to stop bleeding. You will learn three quick techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds out: (1) How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound; (2) How to pack a wound to control bleeding; (3) How to correctly apply a tourniquet. These three techniques will empower you to assist in an emergency and potentially save a life.

There is no minimum age requirement for the STOP THE BLEED® course, although we do recommend letting parents/guardians know about the graphic images and content included in the presentation. Instructors have taught the class to kids of all ages!

Upon completion of the class, a certificate will be provided as a provider in Stop the Bleed.

The class is limited to 20 participants.

Minutes Matter Program

In an emergency, minutes matter. You never know when you might find yourself at the scene of an accident, cardiac arrest, overdose, or other crisis. From calling 911 – and knowing what to say – to clearing a path for emergency professionals, even the most basic knowledge can save lives and improve outcomes.

Emergencies can happen anywhere, from our homes to our public spaces, and even basic information about life-saving interventions can help save a life. From calling 911 to locating an AED to knowing how to access support from a trained crisis counselor via 988, every person can be more prepared.

UPMC launched Minutes Matter to provide community members with access to basic emergency information and education about life-saving interventions.

Class Description

The Community Injury Prevention and Emergency Preparedness program is a 2-hour class which discusses what to do when Minutes Matter. A PowerPoint presentation discusses Hands Only CPR, AED use, Stop the Bleed techniques, Narcan and Epi administration and mental health emergencies. There will opportunities to practice the skills learned, as well as a question-and-answer period.

There is no minimum age requirement for the program, although we do recommend letting parents/guardians know about the graphic images and content included in the presentation.

No Certifications Are Offered with This Program.

The class is limited to 20 participants.
