Passavant Hospital Foundation partners with UPMC Passavant to provide a wide variety of health and wellness education programs free to the public. The courses below feature speakers who are top-notch physicians, clinicians, and researchers providing up-to-date medical information in layperson’s terms. The sessions are interactive with time for questions and answers.

A Certificate of Attendance is awarded for these seminars. UPMC Passavant is a hospital accredited by The Joint Commission and an approved provider for continuing education requirements for professional nurses.

Bridging Values and Experience:  Difficult Discussions in Health Care

This conference will address ethical issues in medicine that necessitate difficult discussions—clinician-patient, intrafamilial, or society-wide discussions. In this conference, 'healthcare' will be considered from a broad perspective, encompassing both clinical discussions with patients and families and policy discussions on healthcare topics.

Learning Objectives

Participants should be able to:

  • Respond to patients’/families’ resistance to bad news and their request for inappropriate medical interventions
  •  Participate in both society-wide and clinical discussions (i.e., with patients/families) of medical aid in dying 
  • Return results of dementia risk assessment to patients in a manner in-keeping with the patient’s goals in testing 
  • Discuss the personal financial implications of established and emerging treatments for patients and their families
  • Avoid value-laden language (e.g., "lethal", "futile") that is not consonant with the patients/parents values when discussing options following serious diagnoses

Continuing Education Credit

In support of improving patient care, the University of Pittsburgh is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Physician (CME):  The University of Pittsburgh designates this live activity for a maximum of 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nursing (CNE): The maximum number of hours awarded for this Continuing Nursing Education activity is 6 contact hours.

Pharmacy (CPE): This knowledge-based activity provides 6 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit.

Social Work: As a Jointly Accredited Organization, University of Pittsburgh is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. University of Pittsburgh maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 6 continuing education credits.

Law:  This program has been approved by the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board for 6 hours of substantive credit.

Minutes Matter Program  

The Community Injury Prevention and Emergency Preparedness Program was developed by a professional group of healthcare workers to lessen the impact of health-related events or injuries. With expertise from years of medical training, certifications in Injury Prevention, Basic Life Support and Stop the Bleed, we provide the knowledge and skills necessary to keep children and adults safer and more prepared when biking, or to let a bystander, family member or friend take action in the event of an emergency. These programs offer the skills and knowledge to allow those precious moments before help arrives to be productive and potentially lifesaving. Minutes Matter!

You never know when you might find yourself at the scene of an accident, cardiac arrest, overdose, or other crisis situation. From calling 911 – and knowing what to say – to clearing a path for emergency professionals, even the most basic knowledge can save lives and improve outcomes.

UPMC launched Minutes Matter to provide community members with access to basic emergency information and education about life-saving interventions. UPMC experts will educate attendees on simple life-saving interventions including AED training, hands-only CPR, Narcan administration, and “Stop the Bleed.” Attendees will be able to experience hands-on demonstrations.
